What’s the story behind SMASH?

We launched Smash Volleyball in 2018 after noticing a lack of programs for youth volleyball players in Vancouver. Many kids who loved the game were being turned away from limited spots on club and school teams. We’ve grown to teach over 1,500 kids annually through our weekly programs, camps, and boys’ and girls’ development teams.

Smash was founded by Brian Hiebert, a former national team player and Olympic volleyball referee, and Darrin Moreira, a former college athlete and professional coach with a Master’s in Coaching Science.

What makes this program different from others?

Smash specializes in beginner and intermediate players, offering a positive and inclusive environment. We emphasize communication and teamwork, and we always accommodate friend requests regardless of the program or tryout. All development team practices and playdays are local and allow for participation in other sports or activities.

We also offer weekly skills & games program with options six days a week at various Vancouver locations, serving youth from Grades 4 to 11. While we do specialize in beginner and intermediate players, we encourage Advanced players to register in older age groups for additional challenge.

What kind of experience can kids and families expect?

We use age- and skill-appropriate volleyballs and court sizes to create a fun, safe, and inclusive atmosphere. Our coaching includes key words and motor learning principles to help kids develop their skills. Every program includes at least 50% skill focused and structured gameplay. By the end of a 6–8 week program, kids will know how to bump, set, serve, and of course—smash!

Why do families trust SMASH?

Since 2018, we’ve introduced volleyball to more than 7,000 kids. All our coaches are certified, screened, and experienced in working with youth. We prioritize anti-bullying and promote teamwork among both players and coaches.

Where do you operate, and what communities do you serve?

We run programs across Vancouver in the following communities:

  • Killarney – École Anne-Hébert

  • Shaughnessy – Shaughnessy Heights United Church, York House School, Granville Park

  • East Vancouver – Gladstone Secondary, Vancouver Christian School, Brewers Park

  • Point Grey/UBC – Spanish Banks, Osborne Centre (UBC)

We welcome boys and girls of all skill levels in Grades 4–11.

What would you say to a parent who’s considering joining?

There is no risk. If after the first session your child doesn’t feel the program is a fit, let us know—we’re happy to offer a switch or refund for any unused sessions. Have a shy child? Just make a friend request and we’ll keep them with their friends, no matter the program size. Our weekly programs and camps require no tryouts and are open to all skill levels.
